Speech and Language Therapy Assistant Practitioner

I have always had a passion for communication and the power it holds.

There are so many forms of communication to help everyone get their message across and be understood, for some it is easy and others more of a challenge, but it can change one’s life.

I have supported children and young people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and additional needs in many settings, including mainstream schools, a home for children with complex needs, community teams, and specialist therapy groups. I have worked closely alongside therapists and modelled our work with parents and carers.

My work with adults also includes working as a health care professional in the Learning Disability team.

Coming to work and singing and playing with others - what more could a big child like me wish for!

My favourite word is “Empathy” to put yourself into someone else’s shoes! This could be for communication, emotions, environment, etc.

Allowing a student with a hidden disability (ADHD, dyslexia…) to struggle academically when all is needed is appropriate accommodations and explicit instructions is no different than failing to provide a ramp for a person in a wheelchair.
