Speech and Language Therapist

I chose speech and language therapy because I wanted a career where I was helping people. I also have a keen interest in science and studied biomedical science for my undergraduate degree, so when I found speech and language therapy it seemed like the perfect fit for me. It encompasses both elements of my science background in terms of problem-solving and analytical thinking as well as working with people. I am passionate about supporting children and their families to develop their communication, using methods and strategies which are best suited to them. Speech and language therapy is such a rewarding and diverse job that allows you to work with many different people, which is why I love it!

My favourite word is “muc mhara”. This is the Irish word for a porpoise, which hilariously translates directly as “sea pig” in English. I chose an Irish word as I am from Ireland and this word in particular as it is a good demonstration of how descriptive the language is which is what makes it so interesting and beautiful. It can also conjure up some funny images when thinking of the direct translation!
