Makaton uses signs and symbols to help people communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech in the spoken word order.

Course summary: Makaton Foundation course

An accredited 2-day course run by a licensed Makaton trainer for professionals to learn and use signs and symbols to develop the communication skills of a wide range of Makaton users in a variety of settings. The course combines a practical approach with theory and technical information.

Course Aims:

- To understand research into sign and symbol use, symbol design themes, the use and purpose of Makaton and an overview of alternative systems of communication.
- To learn the signs and symbols for Stages 1-4 and Additional of the Core Vocabulary.
- The Foundation Workshop certificate will allow you to attend further accredited Makaton training such as the Makaton Enhancement Course.

You can also complete your Foundation and Enhancement together in the same week (which then means you can train as a regional tutor) so this is a great use of time in the summer holidays!
