Narrative Intervention Training 2021

A workshop exploring assessing and using narratives to enhance language and communication in children and young people with speech, language and communication needs across the curriculum.

By Professor Victoria Joffe, School of Health and Social Care, University of Essex.

Workshop Synopsis:

This workshop introduces and explores the different types of narratives that are used routinely in our daily lives. The importance of narratives in language development, education and social and emotional development will be highlighted. Information is provided on the importance of narratives as a predictor of language and educational performance, as well as its role in the social and emotional development of children. The value of narratives as an assessment and intervention tool, as well as a means of measuring outcomes is explored.

The role of narratives in enhancing language and communication across the curriculum in children and young people with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) will be discussed. The role of narratives in both the assessment and intervention of language and communication will be explored. A critical overview of the evidence base for narrative therapy with children and young people with SLCN will be given. Strategies to facilitate narrative development across abilities and ages will be highlighted.

Workshop Content to Include:

  • Definition and types of narrative

  • The role and importance of narrative ability in language and communication and in the education and wider social context of the child

  • Narrative therapy with children and young people with SLCN: a critical evaluation and overview of the current evidence-base

  • Assessment of narrative skills and the use of Narrative as an outcome measure to chart changes in performance

  • New ways forward and strategies to facilitate narrative skills across the age range and education curriculum

  • Future implications and directions for research and clinical and educational practice

  • Questions and group discussion

Narrative Intervention

The Narrative Intervention Programme aims to improve the understanding and telling of stories. It is a practical language programme was created by Victoria Joffe, a specialist speech & language therapist.

The Narrative Intervention Programme:

  • Focuses on enhancing the understanding and expression of stories in students aged from 8 to 18 with language and communication difficulties.

  • Aims to create an awareness of how storytelling can be used to enhance learning in school and social interactions in school and home environments.

  • Facilitates storytelling.

  • Enhances the joy and enjoyment in telling stories.

  • Identifies different types of narratives and provide examples for each type.

  • Encourages effective listening and attention skills.

  • Examines different means of making story production more interesting through vocal variety, body language and print.

  • Encourages the use of the story planner in planning and structuring essays in the classroom and for homework.

Nuffield Dyspraxia Programme 3 - 1 day Training Workshop

Presented by Dr Pam Williams, this course is suitable for Speech and Language Therapists who want to update their knowledge of developmental verbal dyspraxia and to learn about the third edition of the Nuffield Dyspraxia Programme.

Topics include theoretical aspects, assessment, diagnostic approaches, management issues and therapy approaches.

There will be lecture and workshop sessions.

Please feel free to bring along your own copy of the NDP3, if you don't have one you will need to purchase a copy for £15 + postage (sent to you by the Nuffield organisation). Please notify us at the time of booking if you require a manual by emailing Lindsay-Ann@magicwordstherapy.co.uk.

Please note that refreshments and light snacks are provided, but lunch is not provided. Very reasonably priced lunch is available to order directly from the hotel, there are lots of shops nearby, or you are able to bring your own.

Topic 1: SLCN

Over the next year our Speech Therapists will be hosting half termly forums about communication on a range of topics.

An Introduction to Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) will give you a chance to learn about the different areas of SLCN including attention and listening, play, understanding and expression of language.

We will discuss the developmental milestones for these as well as think about how these difficulties can impact children in their everyday environments. This is the first forum in a series which will help you to develop your knowledge and skills of how to support children with SLCN.
